Rooney Announces Retirement from International Football

Wayne Rooney who scored a record goal for England announced retirement from international football with instant effect while manager Gareth Southgate was trying to return to the team. Rooney scored 53 goals in 119 matches for England (2003-2016) and scored the 200th goal of the English Premier League on Monday night. Everton and Manchester City lost the match 1-1. This 31-year-old player told Southgate about his decision during a phone call on Tuesday.

Rooney has so far scored in both the Premier League matches. He was once again associated with the club who had cleared him as a youngster and after that he joined Manchester United. 

Rooney said in a statement to the press association Sport. I appreciate it very much. “Rooney said, "After considering it for a long time already I told Gareth that I have decided to retire from international football for the best." At any time I was selected as a player or captain it was really special and whoever helped me I thank them but I believe that the time has come to take retirement now.
